Hodgetts Recording Session

Recording session for Blake Hodgetts' upcoming album.

The drive up to Oregon included a very nice view of Mount Shasta. That thing looks like it's ready to blow or something. Makes me nervous to drive by it.

Callie Hills offers her flute money to play better.

Actually, it's a little-known trick, she tells us. Crisp new dollar bills have a coating that, when rubbed between the pads and the holes on a flute, will reduce the noise of sticky pads, which sound like clickety-clicks when close-mic'ing in a recording session.

Practicing a flute part before a take.

Recording was done in the girls' room, as we looked at pictures of the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the walls.

We got through a lot of material over the weekend, and I was doing a lot of learning-as-I-go. I'm hoping it all sounds good on the final album.

The song Virtual Date requires a ukelele part. Only I don't know how to play a uke and I don't own one.

So capo 7, and use a piano-tuning mute tied to the two lower strings, and you get a nylon string guitar that sounds quite a bit like a uke. It was my idea, so I hope that it sounds right in the final mix...

Something you don't see every day... Blake with a guitar in his hands.

The chords at the end of Virtual Date are absolutely brutal, he's trying to help me find a good inversion for one particulary tricky chord.

I finally get it all down, and he says, 'and then on the next bar the chords get really weird...'

Tony in Sysadmin mode.

I should know better than to let others have access to my camera when I'm in unflattering poses...

I'm trying to get my PC to print directly to Blake's printer using TCP/IP. It's not working, so I'm spending a lot of time diagnosing stuff...

Practicing up before laying down tracks. Couldn't get my computer to print the re-done transcription file to Blake's printer, so I'm trying to read it straight off the monitor. Turns out I couldn't do this because of the RF noise picked up by the mics. Ended up doing it the old-fashioned way instead.

What is the old-fashioned way you ask? FTP the chord sheet to my taxi site, have Blake grab it on his Mac, deal with the CR/LF problem induced by the ASCII transfer, and print from his powerbook, of course.

We ran very late on Sunday night tracking electric parts. I think this was taken at about 2am.
