OVFF 2005

Pictures and Movies from OVFF 2005, Columbus, Ohio.

We arrived in Columbus at about 10am Friday, having taken a red-eye from Seattle. It was wonderful seeing a group of familiar faces waiting for us at the airport. From left to right: Me, Merav Hoffman, Batya Wittenburg, Meg Heydt, Michelle Dockrey (Hereafter referred to by her nickname Vixy). Out of frame, Chris Mangum is driving the minivan.

Evening rolls around and actual con-related things are starting to happen. We have the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, complete with a loud and chaotic game of Encore.

It was a packed house for the Pegasus Nominees concert. Here, Seanan and I are performing Talis Kimberly's Archetype Cafe, one of the nominees for Best Song. Please note that this is only the second time we'd played the song together. We learned each of our parts independently, and ran through the song only once during the rehearsal that morning. It went so perfectly that we didn't need to run it again. Oh yeah, we're good.

Another angle of Seanan and me performing Archetype Cafe. When Seanan originally asked me to learn the song for this concert, I was a little worried. The song was tricky to reverse-engineer. At first, I'd had it figured out with some difficult stretches and odd chord forms. And then I realized it was played at capo 4. Turns out that when you put the capo in the right spot, most of the song is played with one finger. *smacks forehead*

Andrea Dale listens intently during one of the Friday night filk circles. It was during this circle that I got the chance to inflict When I Was a Boy: 2100 upon our Guest of Honor, Frank Hayes.

The big production number of the concert is Pretty Little Dead Girl, complete with 50's doo-wop and costume changes. This concert featured the most onstage nudity of any Filk con, as Seanan quickly changed into that dress behind a sheet held up by her cohorts. From left to right: Our Meg, Vixy, Seanan, Paul, Erica Neely, Amy.

Riverfolk perform on Saturday. Except, it's really only one member of Riverfolk, Becca Allen (on the right). Filling in for the missing members are Steve Macdonald (left) and Dave Clement from Dandelion Wine (center). They sounded fantastic.

Judi Miller performs the lyrics in sign language for Frank Hayes during his Guest of Honor concert on Saturday. She was very entertaining, doing this the whole con. I'd heard about her before, but this was my first chance to actually see her. Neat.

Joe Giacoio (I believe his last name is pronounced Gee Ah Coy Oh) blows everyone away with is percussive hammering guitar technique during the one-shots. He's doing a piece from his new album I Sing the Body Acoustic. Needless to say, I bought both his albums immediately.

Saturday night is the Interfilk Auction, where they raise money to send filkers to remote places. It's sort of a filk foreign exchange program. Here, Dave Weingart auctions a magic wand.

If you've never been to an Interfilk auction, you might be surprised to witness the process of 'wenching', which I suppose should be self-explanatory. Here, Vixy wenches Chris Mangum, in an effort to get him to increase his bid on her illustration. She donated her original Wings illustration to this auction.

I do not know the person being wenched here, but I'm envious because she's getting a hand massage from Vixy.

Later Saturday night, during the 'Books' theme circle, Batya performs a hilarious parody of Billy Joel's The Longest Time, about the seemingly endless Robert Jordan books. Complete with entire doo-wop group backing her up.

Rand Bellavia and girlfriend Erin Nappe sing Stop Talking About Comic Books or I'll Kill You during the filk circle in the hall on Saturday night. That's my guitar, by the way. I've got a standing offer that anyone in any filk circle can pick up my guitar to play it at any time, you don't even need to ask. My guitar has a mind of its own sometimes, though. It tended to throw itself at Rand a lot during this con.
